Things hidden in the mind come out of the ground, I bury a glass marble into the earth, and it comes out of my mouth...

Memories of childhood videogames, alongside objects gathered
in Athens through a method of careful selection, choosing only remembered objects. Those are the ones that conjure up a phantom of a different time.

Giving body to this cellar of a mind, rather than dwelling on nostalgia. A picture archive, located in the back of a mind where dreams and memories digested early in life have all gone to stay – the last frontier of the base of a psyche.

A glass marble, a superball with star shapes inside, a small plastic diamond. Things a child could not resist and will hold in their small, sweaty hand to make sure it doesn’t lose them. Things that look like candy and almost give you an idea of what they would taste like if they weren’t made of glass or plastic. A toy car, painted with nail polish that my aunt once gave me. The feeling of guiding a videogame character safely through the moody images on the screen.

These kinds of jewels are objects that grab your attention, they make you look at them. In a way, they are like symbols that encompass visual information and hold a strong power within them. I think this visual information charges up the atmosphere in the room and allows the viewer to come face to face with the phantom.

“Toy Car Painted with Nail Polish” brings to life a personal, psychological mystery. The topic of memory and the method of juxtaposing mind with space creates a habitable image of a subjective experience from someone else which the viewer can enter. Video, sound, sculpture and found objects transform into a mental landscape, recreating the space in the back of a person’s mind – where old memories, remembered and forgotten, are stored away. With visual and tactile access points, an abstract experience of being in the mind of the character in this story is created.

Niklas Feinik is an artist based in Helsinki, Finland and is currently staying in Athens. They work in an intuitive way, trying to create installations that emit poetic information. Focusing on the experience created by the works, they create emotional, narrative images and reflections of mental images. In these installations, video, text, photography, found objects, light and earth materials all form a language of symbols and meanings.
