Upon arriving in Athens, the artist encounters the ubiquitous "doilies" (σεμεδάκια) – small knights of the domestic realm often handcrafted by women, providing moments of disconnection and pure pleasure in crafting intricate forms. The origins of the doily remain shrouded in mystery. It transcends generations and cultures, just as the women in the artist's family. With an "All Over the Doily" process, an unexpectedly intricate openwork image emerges. An exploration of the intersection of past and present, geography and identity – a representation of the artist's personal journey, capturing the essence of an era in a cathartic, humbling reflection. A return to the joy of genuine creativity through the lens of independent femininity, a relentless pursuit of curiosity.
Ana Castillo is a self-taught Franco-Spanish artist currently based in Athens. Her creative practice involves painting and drawing, often using unconventional materials like denim, doilies and clothing.
Recently, she has redirected her attention to her immediate surroundings, drawing inspiration from her own photographs, departing from the social media-driven themes of her earlier works. Following exhibitions in Germany, her previous place of residence, collaborative work with a fashion designer, press illustrations, and live painting mural for a national basketball team, she actively seeks new and diverse projects.
